We got the glowdown on just why your skin can benefit from LED light therapy with endota National Educator and skin expert, Tamara Noske.

Using light for healing is not a new science, as this was first developed in the 1900s and has been used by NASA for their astronauts. ‘LED studies on living organisms began in the early 1900s. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that research expanded further into the cosmetic industry, since the results from healing tissues also improved superficial skin conditions at the same time,’ explains Tamara.

What this means is that LED light therapy helps by healing your skin tissue, while also targeting other skin concerns you may have.

‘Skin cells have chromophores, which are essentially small light receptors that absorb the light from LED. The light travels down the various layers of your skin to a targeted area based on the wavelength of the light and the amount of time the LED is on for,’ says Tamara.

Because your skin has different layers and LED light has different wavelengths, Tamara explains that ‘Some wavelengths will target your skin’s surface layers, known as your epidermal, while others will go down to your skin’s deeper layers and reach the base of your dermis.’

does led light therapy work? According to Tamara, ‘Yes! Science has shown that photons of light travel into the skin and are received by your chromophores. When the light is absorbed, it will give a boost of energy to the skin cell and deliver the message that it should function correctly at a cellular level.

‘It's like a jump start for skin cells! Over the next few days there will be a noticeable ripple effect, as the light energy received by those skin cells will also be passed on to other skin cells nearby.’

In order to target skin concerns, Tamara explains that ‘Each colour of LED light therapy has a different wavelength and is programmed to travel to a specific layer of skin to target those skin cells.’ While there are many LED colours used in LED light therapy, the most common are blue light, red light and near infrared light, which can be experienced in many of our facials. The skin benefits of each light vary, so your therapist can choose the light that best suits your skin’s needs.

Blue light targets the epidermis to reduce acne and bacteria, and balance oil flow

Red light targets the dermal layers of your skin to increase collagen and elastin production, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve hydration and rejuvenate the skin

Near Infrared light targets the deeper layers of the dermis to reduce pigmentation, scarring, and inflammation, while relieving redness.
